High speed thrills at On-Hold Marketing!

The beginning of 2005 heralded great excitement, when one of the directors of On-Hold, Mike Gardner, swapped the thrill and speed of surfing for an exhilarating no-holds barred trolley race!

Mike was chosen to be the rally driver for Quiksilver's Team Quiky in the much-anticipated Red Bull Trolley Grand Prix 2005, held at the Auckland Domain on Sunday 13th February.

The Build-Up...

The rest of the muscle-bound team from Quiksilver included Nick 1 and 2, Stephan, and Arrow. Competitors were judged according to theme, as well as speed, and Team Quiky did not disappoint. Clad in the latest slick black wetsuits and red caps, the lads wheeled Mike out to the tunes of “Thunder” – driving the crowd wild with their great Quiksilver giveaways. From cameras to caps, if you were in the firing line, you scored!

The Race!

From then on, the gloves were off. Tension mounted as Mike buckled his helmet. The red, aero-dynamic trolley-kart, cunningly made by Gordon from a display cabinet and surfboard, glinted in the sunlight. Team Quiky gave it their all, using sheer brute force and determination to give their driver a head start.

Racing against Porsche down Lower Domain Drive, the only way to defy gravity was no brakes - all courage! And it worked. For a heart-stopping moment, Quiksilver spun out of control round the final hairpin bend. Wrestling with the steering, Mike brought it back in hand, to come flying through the finish line in a time of 47.3 seconds.

The Results

With a crowd of 100, 000 to bear witness, Team Quiky were only 3 seconds behind Porsche’s winning time, making them the 2nd fastest! Overall, Team Quiky were placed 3rd, and the team is thrilled that they’ll be able to relive the moment at their very own Red Bull Rally Experience. The whole team will get to ride and learn driving skills with one of NZ’s top Group A Rally teams in a Group A rally car at a private testing location.

So wherever you are this year, rest assured that Team Quiky will be barrelling along, whether its at a rally, or on the waves! We'll see you at the next Red Bull Trolley Grand Prix – but we may be too fast for you to see us!
